It Doesn't Hurt to be Prepared

The (terrible) idea of giving Obama the power to shut down the internet has been pushed by useful idiots in both the Democrat and Republican parties and championed by "Independent" Joe Lieberman.  Now that Egypt has shown that a government can successfully do it, to stifle dissent, surely the administration that came up with the brilliant idea of urging folks to rat out their friends and neighbors to flag.gov if they criticized Obamacare is giddy with excitement over the possibility of being able to shut down the ability of people to communicate quickly in the event of a "generated crisis".

HillBuzz has urged us all to become prepared for such an event (just in case):
Since he took office, Obama has been jockeying for an “Internet Kill Switch” that would give him the power to turn off the Internet here in the United States one day.  He claims he wants it in case there’s a massive cyber attack.  More likely, he wants it in case he ever wants to silence all opposition to himself and what the Left’s doing to this country.  The entire “net neutrality” kabuki underway with the FCC and “Julius Seizure” only makes sense if you view it as an attempt by the Left to gain the power to shut down the conservative blogosphere and Tea Party movement.
The Left controls the broadcast networks and the majority of the print media, but it cannot control the Internet.  One of the primary goals of the Alinsky methods followers is to control the flow of information, and the Internet is a major obstacle to that for them.
Egypt has shutdown its Internet in the attempt to control its people.  But, Egyptians are getting around this and are communicating anyway.
How are they doing this if the government has shutdown the usual means of communication they all use?
Let’s take notes, see what’s working on the ground there, and then start formulating our own individual plans for what we can do in the event this ever happens here on American soil.
There is a wealth of ideas in the comments section at that post (HillBuzz has some of the best fans and the threads underneath HB posts are as terrific as the posts themselves). There is another post at HillBuzz about this which links to a blog, which links to a PCWorld article about possible workarounds to facilitate communication even if the government DOES shut down the internet and cell phone services. Read it HERE and then feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below.

It never hurts to be prepared.

My heart always has room for more treasured friends. But I don't know how well my screaming kids in the background will go over. LOL

When maintaining exact frequency tuning is iffy at best, the other voice(s) can sound like bad cellphone connection and worse (otherworldly), yes, background noises can be an issue ! SWR can seem really primitive in that respect, but when there are few or no other ways to communicate, it`s worth the aggravation !

Let`s hope it never comes to that !

Kids are self-tuning as well, aren`t they ? ;-)

In its way, SWR can be much like any other social networking; meeting new people, establishing rapport and shared interests !

Do you have room for another world ?

DIY AD-HOC WI-FI networking sounds like a good way for friends and close neighbors to stay in touch ! I almost understand how it works !

There`s a `puter techy type nerd guy in my local fishwrap and birdcage liner who wrote about this subject just last week. Made sense for a group within wi-fi range. His column is where I learned about Clickfree Auto-Backup and a couple other useful bits .

Good idea, MJ ! But I thought it was Boy Sprouts who learned to "Be Prepared" !!? ;-)

Country moms who lose their water supply along with the heat and electricity when there's stormy weather or a drunk hits a pole on the highway also know all about the need for preparedness.

Unfortunately, I am in a rural area, so the wifi network would not likely work. We also don't even get radio reception clearly so I still need to look for other alternatives, I think.

The picture gets scarier: apparently the FCC has ordered NBC newsrooms to partner with SOROS! This is bad, very very bad. http://bigjournalism.com/dloesch/2011/02/03/fcc-orders-nbc-newsrooms-to-partner-with-soros-funded-non-profits/
