Jessica Roake, a fan of Marxist literature, has an article at Slate bemoaning the values which children learn from Thomas the Tank Engine and his friends on the Island of Sodor: hard work, good manners, friendship, and being a useful contributing member of one's society. Roake complains that the Thomas story lines shine a positive light on Conservatism and (predictably) she even goes so far as to imply that the fact that one of the engines has black paint is raaacist! The trains in the Thomas story are not community organized and do not belong to a labor union, they pride themselves on being "really useful" and doing the best that they can to do a good job - the horror!
To the collectivist, there must never be a "moral to the story" for children to learn from because those morals may lead down a dangerous road which ends with kids growing up to be happy and productive individuals who are assets, instead of liabilities, to their communities. All that is good must be destroyed, even, or perhaps especially, if that good comes in an adorable form.
You can learn the history of Thomas the Tank Engine and his creator, Reverend Wilbert Awdry, HERE.
Thomas and his friends have been around since before many of us were born, may they continue to delight and enlighten children for many more generations to come.
They can be found at Target; coupons can save some money.

LOL. I tried to read her article at Slate but it was too boring. Analyzing the "British imperialism" inherent in Thomas the Train is just as silly as worrying whether the purple Telly Tubby is homosexual because he carries a purse.
thanks for the chuckle, Zill. Maybe the progs can ruin Thomas the Train by slicing and dicing the way they did Bugs Bunny violence.
They'll have to get through ME first!

It makes me spittin` mad ! It makes me want to deliver a full power (NCIS) Sp. Agent Gibbs head-slap to these destructive-to-society idiots !!
Must be a slow summer if she has to scrape the barrel to write this.
Well Said!!! I can't see how or why anyone feels the need to go after the well loved, long standing and geared for kids. Don't like it? Shut it off, don't give it to you kids, and leave mine alone.. am I right?
Yeah, exposing the stupidity of Marxists is a waste of time. NOT!

Quick, someone send a link of this to Syd Ryan and watch his head explode like a weakly welded boiler.
Yes indeed you are right !
As far as I`m concerned, anyone stupid enough to go around looking for things to oppose and be enraged over deserves to be tweaked early and often.....make their lives worthwhile !! ;-)
Gunny, Lola is one of US, I do believe she is criticizing the Marxist who I am slamming here, she isn't criticizing me. Lola is a regular at my A-C page & one of my favorite commenter there, I'm delighted to see her here. :)
LOL Lola, some people got nothing better to do than pick on stuff the little children like. Luckily for the world, I don't have much better to do than tear those nitpickers apart! Mwuhahahaha!!!!! Thomas makes my little boy smile, I will happily destroy whoever would want to take that away from him.
Whew, close one ! I was just about to crack my "Bean-o" joke..... ;-)
Did you read the Slate piece? The writer prides herself on her collection of Marxist books. Of course she would hate something that encourages children to take responsibility for their actions, to work hard and to be polite and decent people.
That's what separates the CRAPTASTICs from the rest of us. If a normal person doesn't like something, they don't buy it, watch it, participate in it, etc. if a CRAPTASTIC doesn't like something, they want to make sure that nobody can have it. NYC's food nazi mayor is a prime example. Or worse, the uber CRAPTASTIC like Moo and her husband Captain WTF that will forbid everyone but elites like themselves from enjoying the things that they indulge in.
There is plenty of real stuff to be upset over, like islamitization, but tyrants prefer to encourage those things while destroying what makes people happy. A demoralized populace is much easier to force into submission.
Lola is awesome, if she graces my comment section again and y'all get to know her or if y'all hang out at my A-C page more on fb, you will love her.
No, today has been one of those days. `Puter was extra slow, noticed alert of need for sec. scan, so did. 3 HOURS for it to run ! Only able to retrieve email half hr ago. Slate is a predictable disappointment, but I`ll skip over and peruse the article. IF you insist ! ;-)
Her marxist education has taught her not only to recognize that "Thomas...." is a veritable minefield of opportunities for deconstruction, but the ability to perform said deconstruction. She has even learned to call the series "Imperialistic", since it`s British after all ! (that`s the only reason I can see for the label)
And no one is going to expect a lib to understand the rightness and logic of "chain of command" and "respect for authority" and earning your position in a biz. !
I only slogged thru about a third of her verbose drivel before realizing she thinks that the ability to disparage makes one so much more the sophisticate !
Thank GOD my Parents weren`t like her ! No doubt her kids will be prepared for the lib / proggie opposite world she inhabits. Bless their hearts !
Yes dear.... ;-) I`ve not been to the A-C page much, not familiar with the regulars, just began to figure out the operation protocols last time. (OPs helpful yesterday - bad fire in A`vl that took firefighter capt. and seriously burned another ff / 11 in all to hosp. - no civies injured in 5 story med. bldg. - quickest details on TV station FB page )
Anyway, count on me to be respectful, even if snarky... ;-)
When I was a kid, cartoons were FUNNY ! Lots of slapstick type violence ! Even still showing WWII era military versions of Popeye and others that would would NEVER begin to pass the PC smell test today. My Daughter got the early "everything must have a moral to the story" transition. While not necessarily PC, it was losing it`s raw humor factor and for me, disappointing. I didn`t watch too many cartoons with her, but I read all of her books to her. and after the divorce, to my last girlfriend`s younger two kids. (from 2nd and 3rd - I had no desire to be Mr. #4)
I do not insist, you may just find it annoying over there, especially if you read the comments with the very minute exceptions of a few brave souls who pointed out the idiocy of the writer's beef with poor Thomas the Tank Engine.

Check my review below.....I didn`t look at the comments at all. The leftist stink of the Slate was overwhelming ! I may later just out of curiosity now that you mention it; to see if they agree w/ me !
That's funny because we joke with my husband that Go Train Go must be taking place in Chicago because the judge who rode Thomas to the show gives him the 1st place. Well, we *joke* about it.
This is typical of the obsessive neurosis displayed by dogmatic leftists.
They had all the joy sucked out of their childhood by some traumatic incident so using the rationale of the sullen conformist ideology they subscribe to, they feel its a politically justified crusade to make others childhoods as sullen and joyless by politically correcting the cultural narrative devoted to children.
What can one say about the mentality rhat would turn Horkheimer's Marxist critical theory loose on the innocence of childhood fantasy? Obsessed? Pernicious? Demented? Yes all of this and more - it is a self confessed testimony that the rigid inflexible intolerant conformity demanded of leftist true believers attracts psychologically damaged people.
My daughter and son absolutely LOVE Thomas...there is NO WAY that I am going to let some Lefty tell ME what I should let me children watch. Even if I have to horde them and hide them later...I WILL show them in my house.
Just thought I'd say Hey! Just found your site and gotta say "I LOVE IT!" Thank you for opening up a can of whoopass on the LEFTIES!
Imagine being a liberal, enraged at Thomas the tank Engine because the engines were concerned about doing a great job? Maybe they'll do a Hollywood version where all the engines get unionized, become lazy slobs, and then shoot Sir Topham Hat for being a scab!
My kids loved this show, and so did I because it had trains and Ringo!
Ringo was always the cutest Beatle - and the one with the most endearing accent!
