I wrote about the plight of Shoaib Assadullah, the Afghan Christian who had been sentenced to execution unless he reverted back to islam, back in January HERE. Mr. Assadullah had been imprisoned after giving a Bible to a man who then reported Shoaib to the authorities. At the time of my original writing about him, he had been sentenced to execution for apostasy (leaving islam carries a death penalty as per sharia law) and was told that he had one week to live unless he renounced his Christian faith and became a muslim again. For months I have been looking for any further news about this brave man who clung to the comfort of Christ throughout the many long months of his ordeal and I couldn't find anything that I didn't already know - until now...
After a great deal of international pressure, Shoaib Assadullah was released from prison in late March and has managed to flee from Afghanistan to safety. Now he wasn't set free, but he was allowed out on bail and ordered not to leave the city of Mazar-e-Sharif. He was in grave danger while there so friends helped him to obtain a passport and escape the country soon after getting out of jail. Sadly, other Christians in Afghanistan face similar persecution and may be jailed and/or executed as Afghanistan refuses to change it's sharia rules against leaving islam. Please remember persecuted Christians in your prayers.
